  1. Hi Julia,

Well.. I’ve just read your piece on finding love abroad and boy can I relate to you. Very well said and thought out. Just like you, I’m always in search of adventure, with a need to discover and explore. Recently, I’ve arrived back to my home state of California and I’m contemplating the move to New York City. Like all of us, I have an image in my head of what the City is, but I want an insiders perspective. I have dreams of becoming a photographer, and for whatever reason, New York calls my name. I also have an option to move to Spain toward the end of this year and I’m stuck on what to do. What is New York to you? How has is nurtured you as a person and your passion for adventure and I imagine writing and photographing? Any advice will help… Beautiful writing, btw…

  2. Hello Julia,
I came across your blog through another traveler’s blog. I LOVE your pictures and the way you write. Congratulations on starting your Masters program in Spain! I wish I had known about programs like that before I got mine in CA. I am thinking about a PhD abroad…please let me know if you have any recommendations for post-graduate programs in Spain, Italy, or Portugal. I wish you the best of luck and cannot wait to see more of your pictures from abroad!
    (a fellow wanderlust victim 🙂 )

    • Hi Kristina! Thank you so much for your kind words! If you’re interested in languages, I know a fantastic program. Middlebury College has a Doctor of Modern Languages degree program that allows you to study two modern languages (Spanish, French, Italian, German, or Russian) and study abroad (for a year or more, I believe) in a place of your choosing. Middlebury has something like 50 campuses around the world, and the best language programs in the country which offer intensive work on campus during a summer in Vermont, and then the opportunity to study linguistics, literature and culture abroad. It’s a wonderful option.

Here is a link with more info about the program:

I hope this helps. Feel free to email me with any questions, and especially let me know if you decide to do it! 🙂 xx

  4. Hi Julie,
I read your post on the things no one tells you about falling in love abroad. I studied in London and and now home in NY for two months. I found someone in London and it was the most amazing experience ever. I didn’t go to England to look for love but it found me and I’ve held on to it still. I’m just worried about the future and how things will work out. My family is against me getting any more involved with him because they say it’s not realistic that we will work out, which gets me thinking and they’re probably right. But he’s invited me to his sister’s wedding in August and I don’t know what to do. He even gave me money to help pay for my flight. I’m happy right now but I don’t want to drag it out for so long if it will end in major heart break later on. How did your relationship end or work out?

    • Hi Amanda,

Sounds like quite the situation. All you can do in life is follow your heart, but make sure your head has some say. Only you know what’s best for you. For us it turned out to be impossible for many reasons, in hindsight the distance was probably the least influential factor. It really depends on the people in the relationship; if you’re right for each other, I always like to believe things will work out 🙂
